Rainmaker Content And Little Hat Secures IP And Begins Development On Epic Fantasy Thriller Franchise The Bone Season
London, 19 May – Rainmaker Content, the international distributor specialising in drama, factual and special event programming, has acquired the international distribution rights to 8 x 1 hour epic fantasy thriller The Bone Season based on the international best-selling book series, written by next generation author Samantha Shannon.
Already translated in to 26 languages and now in development for the small screen, The Bone Season is a gothic fantasy story set in an alternative London where clairvoyance has been outlawed – in this rich underworld heroine Paige Mahoney operates as a ‘dreamwalker’.
Designed at the outset to be a multiple-season returning series, the drama will be produced by Harriet Hammond of Little Hat Productions. The Bone Season will be executive produced by Hammond and Victor Glynn of GCB Films.
With input from Samantha Shannon, the screen adaptation is currently being penned by rising Scottish talent IR Bell-Webb. Mentored by Russell T. Davies as part of the BFI Flare Scheme, BIFA- and BAFTA-nominated Bell-Webb graduated from the NFTS with a masters in screenwriting. Their work is rich with characters who exist on the periphery of society, using a unique voice full of dark humour and eccentricity to tell stories through a contemporary lens in an accessible and universal way.
Agencies are currently signing talent to the series, with cast and crew to be announced in the coming weeks.
Samantha Shannon’s debut novel The Bone Season was released when she was finishing her degree at Oxford University. Her subsequent stand-alone novel The Priory of The Orange Tree quickly became a NYT best-seller.
Samantha Shannon says, “I am extremely excited to be working with the creative team on this series which is so close to my heart. Shifting The Bone Season to the screen is allowing me to explore the world of Scion in even more depth and consider the story from new angles.”
Vicky Ryan, Co-Founder and COO at Rainmaker Content comments, “This is an exceptional and engaging narrative with a rich quality – combining the scope and characterisation of epic fantasy with the peril and moral predicaments of a dystopian drama. We are delighted to be working with Samantha, Harriet and IR Bell-Webb as they set out on this exciting journey to recreate The Bone Season for the huge army of fans who we know cannot wait to see their heroine and this remarkable world come to life.”
Set in 2059, gritty and grounded, The Bone Season will evoke London in the Victorian era with a distinct, futuristic look and feel. It is a story of a young woman torn between self-preservation and compassion, who must decide if she can lead a war of justice and place her trust in someone she despises.
